The City sponsors free consultation services (Japanese only) specializing in women's issues (tsukuba shi josei no tame no soudanshitsu). Any woman can make use of this service. Ask about anything you like, including questions related to your daily life, marriage (including divorce), children, parents, work, your neighbourhood, or any abuse that you might be dealing with. The concern does not have to be a serious problem.
Consultations are available over the phone (029-856-5630) and/or by face-to-face confidential meetings. These services are provided on a weekly basis with phone consultations occurring on Mondays and face-to-face consultations on Tuesdays. Those hoping to have a face-to-face consultation will need to call the appointment number (029-857-8145).
While free legal consultations with an attorney are also available, these attorney consultations are by referral only. All consultations must first be screened through either phone or face-to-face consultations, after which an appointment will be made at the counselor's discretion.
Services are provided in person and over the telephone and can include private counselling or law-related issues. Information is provided free of charge, and confidentiality is strictly protected. If you can't speak Japanese, please use the information services for foreign residents.
Tsukuba City offers annual breast cancer and osteoporosis checkups in January. You can apply from sometime in December at any of the health centers. Please confirm the times and the nature of the checkup at the individual health centers at the time of application. You must go in person (or call) to the health center. Once the space limits have been reached, the application process will be closed.
Women over 30 years of age are eligible. However, you are not eligible to have this checkup if you have had a breast cancer examination since April 1 at a medical center. If you have had a mammogram since January 1, you will not be able to have another.
All women over 18 are eligible. However, you are not eligible if you have had this test since January 1. The test consists of doing an ultrasound on your right heel. There will be a meeting to explain the results on another day. The cost is 700 yen, but women over 70 years of age can be tested for free.
